OZZFEST 2007: Metal For The Masses

July 13, 2007

Ernest A. Jasmin of The News Tribune reports: There were plenty of big names on hand when Ozzfest 2007 invaded Auburn's White River Amphitheatre on Thursday, the tour's first American date.

On the main stage there was STATIC-X, LAMB OF GOD and, of course, namesake OZZY OSBOURNE.

HATEBREED headlined a smaller second stage — actually a flatbed truck set up in a nearby parking lot — as metalheads (clad characteristically in black T-shirts despite the sweltering heat) screamed their approval.

But 3 INCHES OF BLOOD — an up-and-coming band with local ties — may have generated some of the afternoon's biggest buzz.

Technically, the power metal outfit hails from Vancouver, B.C. But last year it spent several months in Tacoma, its home away from home, writing songs for the recently released album, "Fire Up the Blades".

It's a disc picking up steam on hard rock stations across the country, including Seattle's KISW-FM (99.9).

The video the band recently shot for "The Goatriders Horde" is likely headed to MTV's "Headbanger's Ball". And Rob Halford, singer for seminal metal troupe JUDAS PRIEST, recently declared himself among the band's biggest fans — the metal equivalent to a shout-out from Mick Jagger.

With that sort of hype circulating, Thursday was the beginning of the band's most important tour to date — a trek that will potentially expose them as superstars or also-rans, not that you could necessarily tell so much was riding on Ozzfest by talking to the 3IB guys.
